Each of our psychiatrists have their individual field of expertise. Dr du Toit specializes in Maternal Mental Health, with focus on treatment of mental illness before during and after pregnancy. Dr Mayne is a generalist with years of experience in old age psychiatry and a special interest in couples that undergo fertility treatment. Dr Thomas has a special interest in treating patients with co-morbid medical illnesses, especially those suffering with chronic pain. Women’s mental health are also close to her heart.
Dr Elsa du Toit

Doctor Elsa Du Toit is a psychiatrist specializing in Maternal Mental Health. For the past five years she led a dedicated Women’s Mental Health Clinic, the Sophia Clinic, in Cape Town’s Northern suburbs. Dr Du Toit’s practice is aimed at the reproductive female with particular focus on the perinatal period (the time before, during and after pregnancy).
She graduated as a medical doctor in 1999 after which she started her GP career in a private practice. In 2006 she obtained the degree BSc Psychology Honours with distinction. In 2010 she became a fellow of the South African College of Psychiatrist and after successfully completing her 4 years of specialization she received her MMed Psychiatry degree in 2011.
Dr du Toit is still actively participating in the public sector as a consultant psychiatrist at Stikland Hospital Maternal Mental Health Clinic. Here she is involved in Maternal Mental Health research. Dr du Toit regularly facilitates and teaches on the subject of maternal mental health and is an advocate for the wellbeing of mothers, their children and ultimately families.

Dr Azelle Mayne

Dr Azelle A. Mayne obtained her MBChB degree from the University of Stellenbosch in 1994. After her medical studies she worked in various medical departments in the United Kingdom. In 1997 she returned to South Africa to start specializing in psychiatry at the University of Stellenbosch. Her post graduate studies were completed in 2001 when she obtained her MMed Psych degree.
She then returned to the UK and worked as a general adult Psychiatrist for approximately 2 years. From 2004 she started working as a psychiatrist in private practice in the Panorama area, Cape Town. She is a co-founder of the Panorama Psychiatry and Memory Clinic (PPMC) and has extensive experience in memory disorders as well as general adult psychiatry.
In the last 5 years she has also developed a special interest in female mental health especially infertility.
For the past 13 years she has worked in private practice and will continue to do so as part of the Panorama Healthcare Psychiatry practice.
Dr Eileen Thomas

Dr Eileen Thomas is a consultant psychiatrist previously employed as consultant for the Division Consultation Liaison at Tygerberg Hospital, where she led a Maternal and Women’s health clinic and was part of the multidisciplinary Chronic Pain Clinic.
Dr Thomas is a general psychiatrist with special interests in: Women’s mental health, psychiatric co-morbidity in medically ill patients and chronic pain conditions. She is an active researcher in the areas of women’s health and traumatology and has published both locally and internationally. She is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Stellenbosch; exploring the use of biomarkers to identify women at risk for developing post-traumatic stress disorder and metabolic disease.
These two ladies will be your first point of contact at the Panorama Healthcare Psychiatry practice. They are able to provide you with information regarding our practice and they assist known patients with all enquiries regarding their management plan.
